After qualifying from Manchester Medical School I served as a surgeon in the Royal Navy undertaking my ENT surgical rotation through the Royal Naval Hospital Haslar, the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital and the Royal Marsden Cancer Hospital in London.
I have published on many aspects of rhinology, otology and Head and Neck cancer and have carried out and published a major review of blast injuries to the ear. I regularly contribute data to clinical audits, including the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons national audit database.
In 1992 I was appointed consultant surgeon and Head of ENT services to the Royal Navy, most of my time being spent at RNH Haslar but also providing ENT services in Gibraltar. At both RNH Haslar and RNH Gibraltar I treated both civilians and military personnel, RNH Haslar providing District General Hospital services to the substantial population of the Gosport peninsular.
On leaving the Royal Navy in 1995 I was appointed consultant ENT surgeon at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. I am engaged in the treatment of both adults and children with general ENT problems including those associated with benign and malignant thyroid disease, throat and voice problems, nasal obstruction and sinusitis. I also treat ear and hearing problems, salivary gland disorders, and snoring.
“Mr Garth is first rate in every way and very dedicated.”
“I have been under the care of Mr Garth for over 14 years and could not have had better care and attention.”
“Mr Garth was very friendly and spoke to my child as well as me.”
In addition to my clinical work I was the Consultant Advisor to the Medical Director General (Navy) and have had a number of managerial roles in Exeter. I am a core-member of the Thyroid Cancer Multidisciplinary Team, which discusses and decides on the treatment of all thyroid cancers in Exeter, North Devon and Taunton. As a member of the South West Training Committee I am involved in overseeing and training ENT surgeons in this region and have regular Medical School teaching commitments.
I have an active Medico Legal practice currently providing over 100 Expert medical reports per year for industrial hearing loss and personal injury cases.
Outside work I enjoy skiing, walking and restoring a steam traction engine.
